Port Nolloth

Exploring Port Nolloth: A Coastal Town in South Africa

Introduction
Port Nolloth is a small town and seaport in the Namaqualand region of South Africa. It is located on the northwestern coast, about 144 kilometers northwest of Springbok. The town serves as the seat of the Richtersveld Local Municipality.

History
Discovery and Early Development
The bay where Port Nolloth sits was known as Aukwatowa by the indigenous Namaqua people. Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias marked this location during his voyage around the Cape of Good Hope in 1487. The area remained uninhabited until copper was discovered in Okiep in 1852. This led to the development of a small service town, which was named Port Nolloth in honor of its surveyor, Captain M.S. Nolloth.

Copper Shipments and Railway
A quay was built in 1855 to transport copper ore from Okiep to the port. The Namaqualand Railway was later constructed to improve transportation between the mine and the port. However, navigational difficulties in the bay caused by the increasing size of ore carriers led to the decline of copper shipments.

Diamond Mining
In 1926, alluvial diamonds were discovered along the coast near Port Nolloth. This discovery revived the town as a service center. Despite the decline in diamond exports in the 1970s, the town continued to thrive.

Challenges and Closure
The port faced challenges with shipwrecks and navigational difficulties due to the coastal reef. The closure of the Oranjemund tanker in 2006 marked the decline of large-scale shipping at Port Nolloth. Today, the port mainly sees minor fishing vessels and recreational boating activities.

Climate
Port Nolloth experiences a moderate climate due to the cold Benguela Current in the Atlantic Ocean. The average daily maximum temperature in summer is around 20°C, with minimal temperature variations throughout the year. The town is also known for its fog bank.

In conclusion, Port Nolloth has a rich copper and diamond mining history but now serves as a quiet coastal town with fishing and tourism activities. Its unique climate and seaside location make it a fascinating destination to explore.
